The leadership of the Liberia Intellectual Property Office (LIPO) on Tuesday paid a courtesy visit to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Monrovia, where they held high-level discussions with His Excellency Yin Chengwu, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Liberia.

The LIPO delegation was led by the Director General, Hon. Garmai Koboi, accompanied by the Deputy Director General for Industrial Property, Hon. Jamus P. Bannah. The meeting served as a platform to strengthen diplomatic and institutional ties while exploring areas of mutual cooperation in the field of intellectual property (IP).

During the engagement, Hon. Koboi reaffirmed Liberia’s appreciation to the Government and people of China for their longstanding friendship and continued support to Liberia’s development efforts. She also provided an overview of LIPO’s mandate, highlighting the critical role of intellectual property in driving innovation, facilitating technology transfer, supporting private sector growth, and contributing to sustainable economic development.

Discussions between the two sides focused on potential areas of collaboration, including capacity building for intellectual property administrators and enforcement agencies, digitalization of IP administration systems, and targeted support for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and local innovators. Other key areas of interest included the protection of traditional knowledge and cultural expressions, as well as the promotion of South-South cooperation.

Ambassador Yin Chengwu welcomed the LIPO delegation and commended the institution’s efforts to strengthen Liberia’s intellectual property framework. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote innovation, institutional development, and economic transformation, while encouraging continued dialogue and cooperation between both institutions.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties expressed their commitment to sustained engagement and explored avenues for technical cooperation, institutional partnerships, and future collaboration frameworks aimed at strengthening IP administration and fostering innovation-driven development in Liberia.

The courtesy visit underscores LIPO’s ongoing efforts to deepen international partnerships in support of the Government of Liberia’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID), with particular emphasis on economic transformation through innovation and knowledge-based growth.
