NPHIL Confirms No Ebola, Yet Funeral Home Workers Still Isolated

    GANTA, Nimba County
    – Staff of the Gompa Funeral Home remain under quarantine even after laboratory tests confirmed that a Turkish national whose body they handled did not die of Ebola or Marburg.

The deceased, identified as Mr. Cumhur Süner, passed away aboard a vessel earlier this month. His remains were transported to the Gompa Funeral Home for preparation before being sent to St. Moses Funeral Home in Monrovia. Fears arose that he may have succumbed to a highly contagious disease, prompting health authorities to swiftly quarantine the facility and detain staff who came into contact with the body.

On Wednesday, September 10, 2025, the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL)announced that laboratory tests had ruled out Ebola and Marburg viruses. Despite this, those placed under quarantine have not yet been released, sparking frustration and unease among Ganta residents.

Community members and civil society groups are now pressing for answers. “Precautions are necessary, but keeping people in quarantine even after negative test results can lead to fear, stigmatization, and unnecessary disruption,” said one concerned resident.

Local leaders have also called on NPHIL to be transparent and proportionate in its response, noting Liberia’s sensitive history with Ebola outbreaks. They argue that prolonging the quarantine undermines public confidence and unfairly damages the reputation of the funeral home and its workers.

As the situation unfolds, citizens are demanding a clear timeline for the release of the staff and for the resumption of normal operations at the Gompa Funeral Home.
