President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has dismissed Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan from his position as Director-General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL). The decision, announced on Tuesday, follows months of growing tensions within the public health sector over key policy decisions.

Dr. Nyan, a renowned Liberian biomedical scientist and inventor, was appointed in August 2024 and became widely recognized for his leadership during the country’s Mpox response. His administration introduced the rapid multiplex diagnostic test, an innovative tool designed to detect multiple infectious diseases simultaneously, marking a major scientific advancement for Liberia’s public health system.

During his tenure, Dr. Nyan also pushed for stronger disease surveillance, improved laboratory systems, and stricter public health regulations. However, his recent decision to impose a nationwide ban on shisha smoking reportedly sparked controversy, drawing mixed reactions from the public and business owners.

While the Office of the President did not immediately provide detailed reasons for his dismissal, sources within NPHIL described the move as “unexpected” and “politically influenced.” Others believe the action could be linked to internal disagreements over enforcement strategies and public communication.

Dr. Nyan’s departure marks another major change in the Boakai administration’s ongoing effort to realign leadership across key national institutions. As the government seeks to appoint a new head for NPHIL, public health observers are urging continuity in the agency’s reform agenda and innovation, driven approach to disease control.
