MONROVIA – In a significant move for the Liberian judiciary, President Joseph N. Boakai has nominated Associate Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay as the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, just days after the current Chief Justice, Sie-A-Nyene Gyapay Youh, celebrated her 70th birthday. Justice Gbeisay, who is 66, will step into the role following Chief Justice Youh’s upcoming retirement, which was announced in August.

Gbeisay brings over three decades of legal experience to the position and has earned a reputation for his fair judgments and commitment to upholding the rule of law. His nomination is seen as a strategic decision by President Boakai, who is keen to strengthen the country's judiciary at a crucial time for Liberia's legal landscape.

Upon confirmation by the Senate, Gbeisay will become the first male Chief Justice in nearly four years, succeeding Youh, who was appointed by former President George Weah in September 2022. The new Chief Justice will face challenges, including addressing backlogs in the judicial system and enhancing public trust in the courts.

Justice Gbeisay’s nomination is expected to spark discussions on the need for judicial reforms and the critical role of the judiciary in safeguarding democracy in Liberia. The appointment reflects President Boakai’s commitment to fostering a robust legal system and promoting experienced leadership in the country’s highest court. The Senate will now review and vote on the nomination in the forthcoming session.
