Congo Town, Liberia – September 2, 2025: President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has officially launched construction on two overpass bridges along Tubman Boulevard, a landmark infrastructure project aimed at tackling Monrovia’s chronic traffic congestion. Valued at US$36.6 million and fully funded by the Government of the People’s Republic of China, the project is expected to be completed within 24 months.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex, drew senior government officials, diplomats, civil society leaders, and international partners.

Public Works Minister Roland Layfytte Giddings hailed the initiative as a “historic milestone” in Liberia’s infrastructure journey. He highlighted that beyond easing traffic, the project will create between 300 and 400 jobs for both skilled and unskilled Liberians.

“China has been a steadfast partner in Liberia’s development,” Giddings said, pointing to previous Chinese-supported projects including the University of Liberia’s Fendall Campus, the Ministerial Complex, and the Ministry of Health headquarters.

Chinese Ambassador Yin Chengwu emphasized that the overpass project reflects the deepening ties between Monrovia and Beijing, following commitments made during the China-Africa Summit.

“This project is about more than infrastructure—it’s about fostering enduring ties between Liberia and China,” he remarked.

President Boakai described the bridges, to be located at the Ministerial Complex and SKD Boulevard intersections, as practical solutions to reduce congestion, enhance road safety, and cut economic losses caused by traffic delays.

“This is the power of road infrastructure: it shortens distances, reduces costs, and drives economic growth,” he said.

The project, led by China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group Co. Ltd (CREEC) under the supervision of China’s Agency for International Economic Cooperation (MOFCOM), will span 2.107 kilometers and feature both East and West interchanges.

Upon completion, the overpasses will improve traffic flow, enhance pedestrian safety, reduce transportation costs, and significantly improve mobility for businesses, schools, and emergency services.
