Koung–Kogar Rift Deepens: Nimba Council Scrambles to Prevent Political Fallout

Monrovia, Liberia – The Nimba Traditional and Cultural Affairs Council has dispatched a 21-member delegation to Monrovia in an urgent effort to ease mounting tensions between Vice President Jeremiah Koung and Nimba County Senator Samuel G. Kogar.

The political clash intensified after Senator Kogar accused the Vice President of marginalizing him from county affairs and treating him with what he described as “utter disrespect.” His remarks, widely circulated across traditional and social media, have sparked sharp debate within Nimba — Liberia’s second-most populous county and one of its fiercest political battlegrounds.

Observers say the standoff reflects deeper, long-standing rivalries over political influence and access to the County Social Development Fund (CSDF), which has historically fueled disputes among Nimba leaders. With both men wielding significant followings, the feud threatens to fracture alliances ahead of the crucial 2029 elections.

The Council, led by Hon. Melvin Gbelia Duo, has emphasized discretion in handling the matter. “We intend to work quietly, outside of the media spotlight, to ensure both leaders find common ground,” Duo stated. The delegation is expected to stay in Monrovia until Superintendent Kou Meapeh Gono returns, as she is believed to be pivotal in facilitating dialogue between the two camps.

For now, Vice President Koung has remained largely silent, a move interpreted by some as maturity and by others as a strategic refusal to escalate the conflict. Meanwhile, Senator Kogar’s open defiance has energized his supporters, who argue that inclusivity and respect must define Nimba’s leadership.

As the Council works behind the scenes, the political stakes remain high. The immediate goal is to reconcile two of Nimba’s most powerful sons — but the broader challenge is safeguarding unity in a county whose voice carries national weight.
