In a significant breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking, the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) has arrested four suspects at the Bo Waterside Port of Entry in Grand Cape Mount County. The arrest took place on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at approximately 6:30 PM.

According to the LDEA, the suspects were found in possession of 844 grams of Methcathinone, a dangerous and emerging synthetic stimulant. The drug has an estimated street value of USD 8,440.00, equivalent to LRD 1,688,000.00. This incident marks the first known attempt to introduce Methcathinone into the Liberian drug market.

Authorities say the swift action by the LDEA’s Grand Cape Mount team prevented the potentially devastating drug from being distributed within Liberian communities. The agency has praised the vigilance and professionalism of its officers at the border.

The arrested suspects have been identified as follows:

Eariel Xavises Aweti, 36, Sierra Leonean

Samuel R. Grey, 28, Sierra Leonean

Alonso Yeah, 35, Liberian, resident of Sierra Leone (also known on Facebook as Alonzo Abasi, a local artist)

Matthew Sherman, 25, Liberian, resident of the VOA Community

Among the suspects, Alonso Yeah is known as a musical artist with 17K folowers on Facebook. His alleged involvement in drug trafficking has sent shockwaves through both the local entertainment and social media scenes.

The LDEA has launched a full-scale investigation into the origin and intended distribution network of the seized narcotic. Officials are also exploring whether the suspects are part of a larger cross-border trafficking operation between Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The LDEA reiterated its commitment to combating illegal drug activities and warned traffickers that Liberia is not a safe haven for the illicit drug trade. Further legal actions against the suspects are expected as the case progresses through the judicial system.
